Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the results of a cementless ceramic on ceramic bering implants, with a minimal 3-year follow up.

Materials & methods: Between May 1998 and July 1999, 35 patients (43 hips) with a total hip arthroplasty, using a cementless ceramic on ceramic bearing implants were performed. The subjects¡¯ average age was 47 years (28-53 years) and the mean duration of follow up was 40 months (36-51 months). The initial diagnoses were osteonecrosis of the femoral head¡¯ in 36 hips, acetabular dysplasia in 5, secondary osteoarthritis in 1 and a revised arthroplasty in 1. The clinical results were analyzed using the Harris hip scores, the postoperative thigh pain, limping and the radiographical outcomes, from the plain radiographs taken 6 weeks, 3 months and year and then yearly, postoperatively.

Results: The mean Harris hip score was improved from 62 to 95 points at the time of the last follow up. On the last roentgenograms, all the cases showed fixation by bone ingroth, with no cases of osteolysis or loosening of the acetabular or femoral components. Femoral cracks occurred in 3 hips, a postoperative hip dislocation in 1 and ectopic ossifications in a further 3.

Conclusion: The hips all showed excellent improvement in their Harris hip scores and fixation by bone ingrowth of both the acetabular cup and femoral stem.
